Pip Trowles
Senior Payroll Processor
Pip originally trained in hotel management before moving into accounts and payroll, working for a number of small businesses in a freelance capacity. She then moved to an accounts and payroll software company where she stayed for 15 years. She started in the support department, progressed to Support Manager and then to Product Manager for the Payroll Product of the software. Pip worked on implementing new features and HMRC legislation into the software and as a result was a key member of the HMRC & BCS working parties for the introduction of the Payroll Standard into software to ensure it met certain standards. To further enhance her skills she obtained an Advanced Professional Diploma in Payroll Management in 2003.
Pip joined us in in July 2012, initially on a temporary basis to cover Maternity leave, but has now joined us permanently.
Pip’s top five issues regarding payroll processing are as follows:
1. When informing a payroll bureau of a new employee please ensure that you provide full information on that employee, preferably using the prescribed form. A name is not sufficient information for an employee to be set up correctly and this will be more of an issue when RTI is introduced.
2. When someone leaves your employment inform the Payroll Bureau immediately so that the correct paperwork can be completed at the correct time. We are often informed several months after an employee leaves that they have in fact left the business.
3. Employers are not aware of their requirements under the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and how this in particular can affect part time or irregular hours employees.
4. Employers not being aware of SSP legislation and their responsibility of when to pay SSP. Many employers do not have a written policy on sick leave which can create more confusion and inconsistency in processing.
5. Employees not being aware of what their tax codes mean especially the implications of any benefits they are assessed on. We often receive calls from employees helping them to understand why their tax codes have changed and why this impacts on their net pay.
